The past few days have been marked by great concern for FC Bayern Munich and us fans regarding head coach Vincent Kompany. What initially appeared to be a circulatory problem developed into a serious medical incident.

In the days leading up to the incident, Kompany had already been battling a viral infection. He had to miss several training sessions and appeared noticeably weakened during the match against Leipzig. He also left the press conference before the Champions League match against Arsenal to his assistant coach, Aaron Danks. Against Arsenal, however, Kompany was back on the sidelines himself. In retrospect, he admitted that he hadn't paid enough attention to his body's warning signals.

On Friday, October 23, the shock finally came: While observing the training session of Bayern's reserve team (U23), Kompany collapsed at the club's training ground. He required medical attention and was subsequently taken to a Munich hospital. FC Bayern confirmed the incident that same evening. The amateur regional league match against Vilzing, scheduled for Saturday, was canceled at short notice.

Sporting director Max Eberl initially offered cautious reassurance on Saturday. Kompany was stable but would have to remain in the hospital for the time being. Eberl made it clear that a return to action was not to be expected within a few days; rather, they had to think in terms of weeks. The coach's health was the absolute priority.

On October 28, a diagnosis followed: Doctors determined that meningism was the cause of the collapse. Kompany has since been released from the hospital and can now recover at home while receiving antibiotics.

The two recent victories against Freiburg and Magdeburg are not expected to hinder his recovery. Kompany is unlikely to participate in the upcoming matches against Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, and Mainz, but there is a good chance that he will be back on the sidelines after the subsequent international break.

Get well soon, Vinnie! 🍀
