Jackfruit, scientifically known as Artocarpus heterophyllus, is one of the most important tropical fruit trees in Bangladesh and is widely recognized as the national fruit of the country. It is deeply connected with the rural lifestyle, traditional food culture, agricultural economy, and natural beauty of Bangladesh. During the summer season, jackfruit trees become filled with large, green, spiky fruits that gradually mature and develop a distinctive aroma and sweet taste. From village homesteads to commercial orchards, jackfruit trees are commonly found throughout the country because Bangladesh has a suitable tropical and subtropical climate for their growth. The tree is valued not only for its delicious fruits but also for its shade, durable wood, leaves, seeds, and long productive life. A well-established jackfruit orchard can provide fruit for many years, making it an attractive investment for farmers who want to diversify their agricultural activities and generate income from their land. However, successful jackfruit cultivation requires proper planning, healthy planting materials, suitable land selection, appropriate spacing, careful seedling planting, regular watering, balanced fertilization, and effective pest and disease management. Farmers who understand these requirements can establish productive orchards that supply nutritious fruit to local markets and create opportunities for selling fresh jackfruit, processed products, and planting materials.
In Bangladesh, jackfruit cultivation is particularly suitable for farmers who have homestead land, elevated agricultural fields, or well-drained areas that do not remain flooded for long periods. By combining traditional farming knowledge with improved horticultural techniques, farmers can increase fruit quality, reduce avoidable losses, and develop sustainable jackfruit orchards for their families and communities.
