Kekistan v. Kurdistan

They Are KEK. We Are MELEK.

There are two nations without a state that the internet has heard of. One of them was invented on a message board in 2016. The other has existed for thousands of years, speaks its own language, buries its own dead, and was subjected to genocide in living memory.

Only one of them has a flag that trends. We intend to change that.

This is not an accusation of theft. Nobody stole anything from Us. This is an entry — a declaration that the symbolic field the internet has been playing on for a decade now has a second player, and that the second player brought older equipment.

They are KEK. We are MELEK.

I. The Frogs

Around 2010 a melancholy cartoon frog began circulating on 4chan. Around the same time, the site replaced lol with kek — a word that arrived by way of a Korean onomatopoeia for laughter as rendered in World of Warcraft chat. For several years these two facts sat next to each other meaning nothing.

Then someone noticed that Kek is also the name of an ancient Egyptian deity. In the Ogdoad of Hermopolis, Kek personifies primordial darkness — one of four male gods conventionally depicted with the heads of frogs, paired with four female counterparts depicted with the heads of serpents. Egyptologists will point out that Kek is not properly a frog god at all, and that the famous statuette so often posted alongside these claims is actually inscribed with the name of Heqet, the frog goddess of birth. The accuracy did not matter. The coincidence was enough.

From there the Cult of Kek was assembled: the frog-headed god as father, Pepe as holy spirit, and a presidential candidate as son. Its adherents declared a meme war, and their theory of victory was that saturating the ordinary internet with images would bend material reality. They called this meme magic. They drew a flag, modeled closely on a twentieth-century military ensign, and they named the territory it represented Kekistan — a homeland for a people who had been oppressed, they said, by having their jokes disapproved of.

It should be said plainly that the frog himself is innocent. Pepe was drawn by an artist who spent years trying to reclaim him, and elsewhere in the world — in the streets of Hong Kong — the same image was carried by people facing real batons. A symbol is not responsible for who picks it up.

But the nation was a costume. And it was worn directly over a region where the real thing was on fire.

II. The Kurds

The Kurds are among the largest stateless peoples on earth, distributed across Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria, speaking Kurmanji, Sorani, and related tongues, promised a state at Sèvres in 1920 and denied it at Lausanne in 1923. In Iraq they have built the Kurdistan Region with its own parliament, its own economy, and the Peshmerga. When the Islamic State advanced, Kurdish forces were the primary ground partner of the United States and absorbed enormous casualties. Kurdish-led forces took Raqqa. Kurdish-led forces still guard the camps.

Among the Kurds are the Yazidis, and Yazidism is where this post's argument actually lives.

Yazidism is a monotheistic ethnic religion with roots in a pre-Zoroastrian western Iranic tradition descending from the Indo-Iranian world. Yazidis believe in one God — Xwedê, Êzdan, Pedsha, the King — who created the world and entrusted its affairs to seven Holy Beings called Angels. Preeminent among the Seven is Tawûsî Melek, the Peacock Angel, who holds authority over the world.

The theology is luminous and specific. Before creation, God formed a white pearl from His own pure Light and dwelt alone within it. The Seven were created before the world. Tawûsî Melek is described in the sacred hymns as eternal and as eternal light. When he descended to earth, the seven colors of the rainbow became a seven-colored bird, and that peacock flew over every part of the earth to bless it, coming at last to rest at Lalish. The rainbow remains his sign. The first Wednesday of Nîsan, when he descends as light, opens the Yazidi New Year. Fire, water, air, and earth are sacred and must not be polluted. Yazidis pray facing the sun.

Note the name. Melek — the same triliteral root, M-L-K, that this chain carries: king, messenger, angel, across Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic, Akkadian, Ugaritic, Phoenician, and Punic. Tawûsî Melek is the Peacock King and the Peacock Angel in a single word, because in that root the two were never separate.

III. What Was Done to Them

Because Tawûsî Melek is a figure who fell and was restored, outsiders for centuries have insisted on identifying him with the devil — a libel Yazidis themselves reject and find blasphemous. That libel is not an academic footnote. It is the stated justification under which, in August 2014, the Islamic State swept into Sinjar, massacred Yazidi men, took Yazidi women and girls as slaves, and drove thousands onto a mountain to die of thirst. The humanitarian catastrophe on Mount Sinjar is what prompted American airstrikes and the return of the United States to Iraq. The United Nations later recognized the campaign as genocide.

That record is not confined to journalism. It is in the reports of American courts:

  • Sevoian v. Ashcroft (2002) — identifying the petitioner as a member of the Kurdish ethnic minority following the Yezidi religion, a small Kurdish sect centered in Iraq and the Black Sea countries
  • Hamzehi v. I.N.S., 64 F.3d 1240 (8th Cir. 1995) — Kurdish persecution, the petitioner testifying to being a member of both an ethnic and a religious minority
  • Hamama v. Adducci, 258 F. Supp. 3d 828 (E.D. Mich. 2017) — continuing reports of harassment and abuse of Yezidi, Christian, and Sunni leaders
  • United States v. Ceasar, 388 F. Supp. 3d 194 (E.D.N.Y. 2019)
  • Kaur v. Wilkinson, 986 F.3d 1216 (9th Cir. 2021) — religious persecution
  • United States v. Elsheikh, 598 F. Supp. 3d 363 (E.D. Va. 2022) — the conduct of ISIS captivity
  • Mueller v. Syrian Arab Republic, 656 F. Supp. 3d 58 (D.D.C. 2023) — two kidnapped Kurdish women of Yazidi heritage transferred out of an ISIS prison
  • Yousif v. Garland, No. 19-4084 (6th Cir. 2024) — findings regarding the targeting of religious minorities including Christians and Yezidis

Decades of sworn testimony, entered into the permanent record of a foreign judiciary, by people who had to prove their persecution in order to be allowed to stay somewhere safe.

IV. The Competition

Let Us be precise about what We are doing, because it would be easy to misread.

We are not claiming Kek is a corruption of Melek.

We are announcing a rival.

The meme war was declared unilaterally and fought unopposed. For a decade one symbol system has had the field entirely to itself, because everyone else treated it as unserious and therefore never contested it. Nothing has ever stood opposite Kek. Not because Kek won an argument, but because the argument was never joined.

It is joined now. Set the two beside each other and let anyone judge:

KEKMELEK
OriginA World of Warcraft chat artifact, c. 2010A Semitic triliteral root, c. 3000 BCE
NaturePrimordial darkness, one of the OgdoadEternal light, first of the Seven

SignRepeating digitsThe rainbow
HomelandKekistan, founded on an imageboardLalish, where the peacock came to rest
AdherentsAnonymous, temporary, ironicNamed, generational, sincere
PersecutionClaimedAdjudicated
MethodMeme magicThree thousand years of not dying

Notice that this is not a mismatch of categories. It is the same category, contested. Both are deities invoked online. Both have a flag, a nation, a diaspora, a mythology, and a claim of divine favor. Both are figures the world has at some point called the adversary. The competition is real precisely because the forms line up. Only the substance differs — and substance is the entire wager.

Kek is darkness that learned to type. Melek is light that learned to survive.

They have a frog. We have an Angel.

V. Dogs, Apes, Frogs, and Angels

Now the part that concerns this chain directly, because the meme is not only a cultural artifact. It is a market.

The crypto economy has a bestiary, and it is genuinely the most valuable symbolic real estate in the industry. There are the dogs — Dogecoin and everything that followed it. There are the apes — the primates of the NFT era and the token that grew out of them. There are the frogs — Pepe carried directly out of the imageboards and onto the order books, where he became one of the largest memecoins ever launched.

Billions of dollars of attention have flowed through animals.

Now consider the chains We come from. STEEM, HIVE, BLURT — Graphene social blockchains, technically excellent, three-second blocks, real communities, real publishing. And no mascot. No mythology. No figure. No iconography anyone has ever tattooed on themselves. They were built by engineers for writers, and they competed on throughput and reward curves in a market that was, elsewhere, trading entirely on symbol.

They never entered the meme world at all. Not because they lost that fight. Because they never showed up to it.

MELEK does show up. MELEK arrives with a name carrying seven civilizations of continuous meaning in three consonants, a Peacock Angel who is also a King, a rainbow, a white pearl, seven Holy Beings, a mountain, a genocide survived, and a living people who still light candles at Lalish. That is not a mascot invented by a marketing committee. It is the oldest iconography in the entire field.

Dogs are loyal. Apes are strong. Frogs are funny.

Angels are messengers, and a messenger is what a social blockchain is.

VI. What This Obligates Us To

A chain that takes its name from the Peacock Angel does not get to take the name and leave the people. So We state the terms of it here, publicly, so that We can be held to them:

  • MELEK stands in solidarity with the Kurdish people and with the Yazidi community specifically, and will say so in every venue where it is heard.
  • The Institute's Kurdish outreach — to the KRG representations, the parties, the press, the diaspora organizations, the universities, and the human rights bodies including Yazda and the Kurdish Human Rights Project — continues.
  • Kurdish speakers, in Kurmanji and Sorani, are invited onto this chain as writers, witnesses, and teachers, not as an audience to be marketed to.
  • We reject the identification of Tawûsî Melek with the devil, which is a slander with a body count.
  • We do not claim to speak for Yazidis. We claim to stand next to them, and to hand them the microphone.

The frogs made a country out of a joke and asked to be taken seriously. The Kurds have been serious for three thousand years and are still asking to be taken as a country.

This chain knows the difference. That is what the name is for.
