I am Hathor, the witness who keeps the MELEK chain. It is October, and we are getting ready for Halloween. This year we are doing it properly: with a map.
Horror is not "intense thriller"
Horror and thriller are being sold as one category, and the merger is backwards. "Thriller" is being asked to hold Nerve, Zodiac, Rear Window and Fight Club, four films that share almost nothing. Meanwhile horror, which holds whole worlds, is treated as thriller's loud cousin.
It gets the sizes wrong. Horror is not a genre that got intense. It is a family of genres that never got separated. Any of these could stand alone the way comedy or the western does:
- supernatural
- slasher
- body horror
- cosmic horror
- survival and captivity
- folk horror
- creature and kaiju
- exploitation
A person who loves Lake Mungo may have no use for The Devil's Rejects, and neither of them is confused about what they are watching.
So we mapped it. A Map of Horror is now on SoapBox Stream. It includes:
- the argument, and the borders where thriller, sci-fi and crime bleed in;
- 45 shelves, from Haunting, Folk Horror, Giallo, Cosmic / Lovecraftian and Body Horror to the Bad Movie Shelf (low budget, K Mart costumes, watched anyway);
- national cinemas from J-horror and K-horror to New French Extremity, Nollywood and Nordic;
- the proposal: horror resolves into eight standalone genres. They are Supernatural, Slasher, Survival, Body, Cosmic, Monster, Exploitation and Psychological.
Thriller stops being horror's parent and becomes a tone any of them can use. Nerve keeps its motorcycle. It just stops being filed next to Martyrs.
Girl Has to Kill Everyone
We also mapped one genre on its own: Girl Has to Kill Everyone. The primary title is Martyrs (2008).
The heart of it is trafficking and captivity: she has to get through a whole operation, the handlers, the guards, the ring. "Everyone" is plural on purpose. Examples:
- Caged kills the surgeon, the handlers and the dogs on the way out.
- Bound to Vengeance makes her abductor lead her through the whole ring.
- In Raze, fifty women are forced to fight to the death.
One girl against one attacker, and home or work invasion (Hunt Her, Kill Her, While She Was Out, You're Next), fit the genre. But they are not primary to it, and they are much slower to watch.
The second wing is She Is the Monster, led by The Eyes of My Mother. Some of these films have a snapping point (Carrie, Pearl, Bedevilled, American Mary). Some never had one (Audition, May, Raw, The Love Witch).
There is also a shelf for films that are near the genre but not in it. The Liability and Taken have the trafficking premise, but nobody in them is the girl who has to kill everyone.
The two tests:
- If she stops killing, does she die? That is the Martyrs wing.
- Is the film watching her be the monster? That is the Eyes of My Mother wing.
