Childhood is one of the most beautiful chapters of human life. It is a time when happiness can be found in the smallest things, when a simple afternoon can become an unforgettable adventure, and when friendship feels pure and endless. As we grow older, life becomes filled with responsibilities, worries, work, and countless obligations. Yet, somewhere deep inside our hearts, the memories of childhood remain alive. Among the many memories of my childhood, one of the most precious is the memory of fishing in the village. Those simple fishing days were not merely about catching fish. They were about friendship, freedom, nature, laughter, excitement, and the innocent happiness of being a child.
Whenever I think about those days, I can almost hear the gentle sound of water, the songs of birds, the rustling leaves, and the excited voices of my childhood friends. I remember the muddy paths, green fields, ponds covered with water plants, and the smell of wet soil after rain. Fishing was a small activity, but it created memories that have remained with me for years. Today, when modern life keeps me busy, these memories often return unexpectedly, taking me back to a time when life was simple and happiness required almost nothing.
My childhood was closely connected with the beauty of rural nature. The village was surrounded by green fields, ponds, canals, trees, and narrow paths. During the rainy season, the entire landscape seemed to change. The ponds became full of water, small canals overflowed, and the fields turned into large green spaces filled with life. Rainwater created countless small water bodies where different kinds of fish could be found.
The village was especially beautiful in the early morning. The sky slowly changed its color as the sun rose, birds began singing, and the cool morning breeze moved gently through the trees. The smell of fresh grass and wet earth created a peaceful atmosphere. For children like us, the village was not simply a place to live. It was a huge playground filled with endless opportunities for adventure.
Among all those adventures, fishing was perhaps the most exciting. Whenever we heard that fish had appeared in a particular pond, canal, or flooded field, we immediately started planning our fishing trip.
The excitement often started one day before the actual fishing trip. We would gather together and discuss where we should go, what kind of fishing equipment we needed, and who would join us. Sometimes we used fishing rods, while at other times we used simple homemade tools.
There was something magical about preparing for a fishing trip. We did not need expensive equipment. A bamboo stick, some thread, a small hook, and a little bait were enough to make us extremely happy. Sometimes we collected earthworms from moist soil and used them as bait. At other times, we used insects, small pieces of food, or other locally available materials.
The preparation itself was part of the adventure. We would sit together and carefully prepare our fishing lines. Everyone wanted to make the strongest and best fishing setup because each child secretly hoped to catch the biggest fish.
On the day of fishing, we would leave home early. Sometimes we went in the morning, and sometimes in the afternoon after finishing our schoolwork. Carrying our simple fishing equipment, we walked along narrow village paths.
The journey to the fishing spot was often just as enjoyable as the fishing itself. We passed through green fields, bamboo gardens, small bridges, and trees filled with birds. During the rainy season, the paths were often muddy, and our feet became covered with mud. But we did not care.
In those days, getting dirty was not something to worry about. In fact, mud was almost a part of our childhood uniform. We would laugh when someone slipped on the muddy path. Sometimes one friend would tease another, and everyone would burst into laughter.
When we finally reached the pond, our excitement reached its highest point. We would choose a suitable place beside the water and carefully prepare our fishing lines. Everyone would sit quietly for a few moments, waiting for the perfect opportunity. Fishing required patience. This was perhaps one of the most important lessons we learned without realizing it. We had to remain still and watch the fishing float carefully. Sometimes we would wait for a long time without catching anything.
