From Letters to Rock Music – A Delicious Evening in a 146-Year-Old German Post Office! 🍻🎸

What do AC/DC, a delicious schnitzel, a cold beer and a 146-year-old post office have in common?
At first glance, probably not much!
But during our visit to Halle (Saale), Germany, we discovered a place where all these things came together to create a wonderful evening.
Welcome to Altes Postamt, a traditional German pub with plenty of character, an interesting history and an atmosphere that immediately made us feel at home.
This is also something new for my blog. Usually, I write about motorcycles, photography, traveling and my 3D printing projects.
Today, however, I'd like to take you somewhere different.
Let's enjoy some good food, listen to some classic rock music and discover a little piece of German history!
The Evening Started with AC/DC! 🎸
Sometimes the first few seconds are enough to know that you've found the right place.
That's exactly what happened when we entered Altes Postamt.
AC/DC's legendary song "Thunderstruck" was playing!
What a fantastic welcome!
I immediately smiled. This was exactly my kind of music.
Looking around the room, I noticed the dark wooden furniture, beautiful green walls, old wooden doors and numerous decorations.
Everything looked wonderfully rustic and authentic.
Nothing felt artificial or overly modern.
It was the kind of place where you immediately want to sit down, order a drink and enjoy the evening.
And the music made everything even better.
Throughout our visit, one classic song from the 1980s followed another.
For someone like me, who grew up with this music, it was almost like traveling back in time.
We felt completely at home.
A Building That Has Seen Generations Come and Go 📮
While looking through the menu, I discovered something that made this pub even more interesting.
The menu included a short introduction to the building's history.
And what a history it has!
According to this information, the building was constructed during the second half of the 19th century.
At that time, Halle was growing rapidly.
Industrialization brought new industries, jobs and residents to the city.
New residential areas developed outside the historic city walls, and the population continued to increase.
By 1890, Halle had approximately 101,000 inhabitants.
A growing city needed an expanding postal system.
On October 15, 1880, this building officially opened as Post Office IV.
That was 146 years ago!
Imagine standing in this building back in 1880.
People would have been arriving with letters, postcards and parcels. Telegrams were an important way to send urgent messages.
There were no smartphones, no social networks and certainly no instant messaging.
Communication was completely different.
What surprised me most was that the building continued to serve as a post office until the 1990s.
For more than a century, letters, postcards, telegrams and parcels were handled here.
Today, instead of postal workers sorting mail, people gather around wooden tables to enjoy food, drinks and conversation.
I really like that transformation.
Once a place where messages connected people, today it's a place where people connect in person.
And somehow, that makes the atmosphere even more special.

The Sound of Schnitzel Coming from the Kitchen 😄
Back to our evening!
While we were sitting at our table, enjoying the music and waiting for our food, we suddenly heard a distinct pounding sound coming from the kitchen.
Someone at our table jokingly said:
"Sounds like the boss is personally pounding the schnitzels!"
We all had a good laugh.
Of course, we don't know who was actually working in the kitchen. It was simply a funny remark.
But the moment fitted perfectly.
Classic rock music was playing, the cozy pub atmosphere surrounded us, and from the kitchen came the unmistakable sounds of food preparation.
It certainly made us even hungrier!
My Dinner – A Traditional German Bauern Schnitzel 🍳
When it came to ordering, I decided on a traditional Bauernschnitzel with fried potatoes and a fried egg.
And I definitely made the right choice!
When the plate arrived, I was impressed.
A generous portion of golden-brown, breaded schnitzel topped with a fried egg.
Underneath were delicious-looking fried potatoes, accompanied by slices of pickled cucumber.
Nothing fancy or complicated.
Just good, hearty German food!
The schnitzel had a crispy coating, the potatoes were nicely browned and everything tasted fantastic.
The portion was generous, too.
This is exactly the kind of food I enjoy in a traditional German pub.
You don't always need expensive ingredients or complicated presentations to create a memorable meal.
Sometimes all you need is a good schnitzel, some fried potatoes and a cold beer.
And that's exactly what I had!

A Cold Beer and Excellent Service 🍻
Of course, a traditional German pub wouldn't be complete without a good beer.
I enjoyed a cold dark beer, which was the perfect companion to my meal.
But there was something else that impressed us just as much as the food.
The service!
The staff were friendly, attentive and incredibly efficient.
You could tell they knew exactly what they were doing.
Nobody had to spend ages trying to get someone's attention.
Drinks and food were served without unnecessary delays, and the staff made sure their guests were well looked after.
As I jokingly wrote in my Google review:
"Nobody has to go hungry or thirsty here!" 😄
And I meant it!
Great service can turn a good restaurant visit into a truly enjoyable evening.

It's the Little Details That Make a Place Special
As someone who enjoys photography, I naturally took a closer look around.
And there were plenty of interesting details worth capturing.
The wooden tables, the green walls, the old doors and the warm lighting all contributed to the unique character of the pub.
There were also pictures, posters and decorations that made the interior feel personal rather than ordinary.

One particularly funny detail was the sign pointing towards the toilets.
Instead of an ordinary modern sign, there was an old white enamel bowl with the words:
"zum POSTKLO" →
A little reminder of the building's postal history, presented with a sense of humor.
Naturally, I had to take a picture!

Another detail that caught my attention was a large photograph on the wall showing people sitting together around a table.
Laughing, talking and simply enjoying each other's company.
To me, that picture perfectly represented the spirit of the place.

Why I Love Places Like This
There are countless modern restaurants where everything looks stylish and perfectly designed.
But sometimes they lack something important.
Character.
Altes Postamt is different.
The building has a long history, the interior feels authentic, and the atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed.
Add delicious food, excellent service and a soundtrack full of 1980s classics, and you've got everything you need for a memorable evening.
I especially enjoyed the contrast between the building's past and present.
In 1880, people came here to send messages across long distances.
In 2026, we sat in the same historic building, listening to AC/DC and enjoying a delicious dinner.
Times change, but the importance of bringing people together remains.
My Verdict – Five Stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Our visit to Altes Postamt was one of those evenings that stays in your memory.
It wasn't about luxury or expensive dining.
It was about enjoying the moment.
The surprise of hearing AC/DC when we walked through the door.
The wonderful 80s music throughout the evening.
The funny moment when we heard the pounding from the kitchen.
My delicious Bauern Schnitzel.
The friendly and efficient service.
And, of course, the fascinating history of the building itself.
Everything came together perfectly.
My personal rating: 5 out of 5 stars!
If you ever find yourself in Halle (Saale), Germany, and enjoy traditional pubs with character and hearty German food, Altes Postamt is definitely worth a visit.
We had a fantastic evening and would happily return.
And perhaps this will be the beginning of something new on my blog.
A little series called:
"Discovered Along the Way – Great Places to Eat!"
After all, traveling isn't only about the roads we take or the destinations we visit.
Sometimes the best memories are made around a wooden table, with good food, great music and wonderful company.
And sometimes, a former post office turns out to be the perfect place for exactly that.
See you on the next adventure! 🍻
