Watermelon Cultivation Methods and the Health Benefits of Eating Watermelon in Bangladesh.

Watermelon is one of the most popular and refreshing fruits in the world. It is widely enjoyed in Bangladesh, especially during the hot summer months when people need refreshing foods to help them stay hydrated. Watermelon is known for its sweet taste, juicy flesh, attractive red or pink color, and high water content. It is commonly eaten fresh, served as a dessert, shared with family members, or enjoyed as a refreshing snack during the day. Watermelon is not only delicious but also provides several important nutrients that support general health. It contains water, vitamins, minerals, and natural plant compounds that contribute to a balanced diet. In Bangladesh, watermelon cultivation has become an important agricultural activity in many areas because the country has suitable soil conditions, warm temperatures, and seasonal agricultural land for growing this crop. Farmers cultivate watermelon in different districts, particularly in coastal areas and regions where sandy or sandy-loam soils are available. The crop can provide a useful source of income for farmers when suitable varieties, healthy seeds, proper planting methods, irrigation, and pest management practices are used. Both commercial farmers and small-scale growers can cultivate watermelon on agricultural land, while people with limited space may also grow compact varieties in suitable large containers. Understanding watermelon cultivation methods and the nutritional benefits of eating this fruit can help farmers improve production and encourage families to include fresh fruits in their daily diets.

Watermelon belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family, which also includes cucumber, pumpkin, bottle gourd, and other vine-growing vegetables and fruits. Its scientific name is Citrullus lanatus. The plant produces long creeping vines, broad leaves, yellow flowers, and large fruits that develop along the vines. Depending on the variety, watermelons may have round, oval, or elongated shapes, with green, striped, or dark-green outer skin. The flesh may be red, pink, orange, or yellow. Most commonly cultivated varieties have red flesh and black or brown seeds, although seedless varieties are also available. Watermelon plants grow best in warm weather and require plenty of sunlight to produce healthy vines and sweet fruits. The crop is sensitive to frost and does not perform well under prolonged cold conditions. Bangladesh's warm climate is generally suitable for watermelon production, especially during the winter-to-summer growing season. However, excessive rainfall, waterlogging, extreme heat during flowering, and certain insect pests can affect plant growth and fruit quality. Farmers should therefore select an appropriate planting season based on their local climate, soil conditions, water availability, and the characteristics of the chosen variety.

Selecting a suitable field is one of the most important steps in successful watermelon cultivation. The land should receive direct sunlight for most of the day because watermelon plants need sufficient light for vigorous vine development, flowering, fruit formation, and sugar accumulation. A field that remains shaded for long periods may produce weak vines, fewer fruits, and watermelons with lower sweetness. Sandy-loam or well-drained loamy soil is generally suitable for watermelon cultivation because it allows roots to spread easily and prevents excessive water from remaining around them. Watermelon can also grow in some sandy soils if farmers provide sufficient organic matter, nutrients, and irrigation. The soil should be reasonably fertile and should not remain waterlogged after rainfall. A soil pH of approximately 6.0 to 7.0 is generally suitable, although watermelon can tolerate a somewhat wider range under appropriate conditions. Before planting, farmers should examine the field and, if possible, conduct a soil test to determine its nutrient status and acidity. Soil testing helps farmers choose appropriate fertilizer quantities instead of applying excessive fertilizer without understanding the actual needs of the crop.
